Wake Up with a Matterhorn View, Your Golden Day Starts Here

Imagine waking up to gentle autumn sun, your gaze drifting over spectacularly colourful larch forests framed by the majestic Matterhorn – all from your hotel room. Mama makes sure you sleep soundly in her cosy box-spring beds, and that first morning coffee on the balcony tastes twice as good.

The Best Hiking Trails in Zermatt in Autumn

With over 400 km of marked hiking trails, Zermatt has no shortage of routes – and many come alive in autumn with their own special magic. Here are Mama’s top 5 hikes for your Indian Summer:

  1. Larch Trail, The Golden Heart of Zermatt: The Larch Trail is an absolute must in autumn. The needles shift from green through golden yellow to rust red, a riot of colour that explains why hikers rave about golden autumn walks in Zermatt. Mama’s tip: look out for the spotted nutcracker burying its winter stash!
  2. 5-lake route, Matterhorn Reflections in Gold: One of Zermatt’s most celebrated hikes and in autumn it becomes even more extraordinary. The Matterhorn reflects in alpine lakes framed by golden larches. Start at Sunnegga cable car, then follow the route via Leisee, Stellisee, Grindjisee and Grünsee to Riffelalp. Mama’s tip: on a calm day, the Riffelsee reflection is legendary.
  3. 360° Loop Gornergrat, Panorama Above the Clouds: Ride the Gornergrat Railway to 3,100 metres, where views span 29 four thousanders. The short loop is accessible for less experienced hikers too. In autumn, the golden larch forests shimmer far below while you look down from above. Unforgettable.
  4. Glacier Garden Path: This trail winds through a dramatic gorge just outside Zermatt. In autumn, the forest turns and the gorge takes on a mystical quality. Perfect for families. Mama’s note: the gorge closes mid October, so don’t wait too long!
  5. Edelweiss path (Höhbalmen), Mama’s Geheimtipp: The route via Trift up to Höhbalmen and into the Zmutt Valley is a personal favourite. The colours here are unlike anything else, orange and gold larches against snow dusted summits, almost like a little Lapland in the Swiss Alps. With any luck you’ll spot ibex or chamois along the way.
